It feels like the person who wrote the story had a bad marriage experience and so decided that all marriages must be horrible and hurtful to both parties.
The plot twists are good as are the actors. But both characters did very wrong things and never really learned from their mistakes or paid for them particularly the wife, who is a demon incarnate.
I wouldn't recommend wasting your money on this one, unless you too feel bitter about marriage. Amazing mystery movie that keeps you guessing.

He is just so lazy and mundane looking. His glazed over expression carries over for most of the film. He does capture the essence of a terrible husband, unsympathetic loser, and a strange decision maker.
At least, you are not supposed to like his character as he is a jerk, but Affleck pulls off unlikable with ease.
Rosamund Pike is the real star of Gone Girl. Her character constantly gets talked about, but once you start following her perspective, the whole film changes lens and meaning.
She is chilling, yet charming. Pike deserved all the acclaim she received for Gone Girl as she is subtle and unnerving throughout Gone Girl!
Carrie Coon is fantastic, likable, and sympathetic as Affleck's sister. She is very genuine and funny, while adding a dramatic depth to Affleck's side as you care about her.
She gives the emotional performance he cannot. They felt completely believable as their respective characters in Gone Girl.
I hope they continue down a more serious film path, but who knows. Also, Kim Dickens is hilarious as the hard boiled detective with a witty arsenal of comebacks and remarks.
Lastly, I suppose I should mention supermodel Emily Ratajkowski's acting is pretty good. She out acts Affleck in her introductory scene, then proceeds to get two more memorable moments.
She did alright. Everyone else is forgettable or passable in their minor roles. It's a great story told beautifully.

I have always liked the actress and enjoy her style of films. My goodness what a film! We watched the first 20 minutes and I was beginning to wonder why my daughters had suggested it.
It was late in the evening and by the time I got to the end I was worried about what the heck I would be dreaming about that night. I would never have guessed the ending.

This has a dark psychological side, that is almost over exaggerated. Ben Affleck seems a weak character from the outset and his wife a bullying, manipulative woman.
In the real world many relationships are genuinely very difficult, and one often sees only one side of them, but the one here is over the top but it is American so maybe that has had some impact on what is acceptable and what is excessive.
The plot is not obvious at the start but soon becomes so and the ending seems a weak finale and definitely not an "and they all lived happily ever after " one.
Definitely a perfectly working film, which looks even better the second time you watch it. The ambiguity of all the characters, the unsual develpment of the story and the effective and intriguing direction put in on a completely different level of the average films you see nowadays.
I only think that it's all too cold and perfect: there is not a moment when characters look alive and actors do something more human than just acting well, and so the direction, all so perfect but that never let itself get lost and seem to lose control of the film.
The final results is an algid film that works this way because it's about people fight to get in control of their lives and situation and ending up being victims and offenders at the same time, and basically trapping themselves in their own mindset and will of domination.
But you don't feel the drama, you don't feel like something real is happening before your eyes. It's a fantastic mis-en-scene, but don't leave you anything.
Watch the film or read the book. Of course you can simply do one or the other, it is up to you. I read the book and then saw the film like many other reviewers.
I think this is relevant and it coloured my view of the film. My biggest problem was that I did not see Amy as being like Rosamund Pike who conveyed a stronger, plainer and more sinister image from the outset than I envisaged from the book.
I saw Amy as outwardly cuter, prettier and more "sugar coated" than she appears in the film. Maybe I am wrong, after all Gillian Flynn wrote the screenplay, though who knows whether she had any control over casting.
That is the essential problem of seeing any film after reading the book as you all your life experiences contribute to your mental images of the characters you reading about and the film rarely chimes with all these.
The opposite is true if if you see the film first and you are stuck with somebody else's visual interpretation in your mind's eye as you read.
On balance, I think it is, generally speaking, and in this particular case, better to read the book first, if you intend to read it at all.
I felt that the early scenes were more comprehensible, especially they seemed to be filmed in near darkness with barely intelligible dialogue, as mentioned in a previous review.
I found that the two media complemented each other; the earlier plot development easier to follow in the book and the later unfolding of the plot and the ultimate scenes clearer in the film.
In short I advise you to do both, it matters little in which order as the sum of the film and the book is greater than the two parts. Report abuse.
