Hollens had previously recorded "Misty Mountain" off the soundtrack for the first installment of The Hobbit series.

And here's an interesting theory for you: While Sheeran hasn't confirmed anything, we're thinking that maybe "I See Fire" was originally supposed to appear on the soundtrack to Catching Fire , but all three songs Sheeran submitted for consideration got rejected — and so, hmm, did he repurpose the song for The Hobbit?
It's amusing because once you hear the song's Hunger Games -esqe lyrics, it makes a lot more sense that it would've been on the Catching Fire soundtrack I mean, the title of the song is "I See Fire.
There's also "should my people fall, then surely I'll do the same," as well as "with that shadow upon the ground, I hear my people screaming out," both of which are clearly symbolic of Katniss' knowledge that the fate of the revolutionizing, bloodied Panem rests in her hands.
