Finkel had originally pitched a child slavery story to The New York Timesbut his subsequent reporting did not uncover proof of enslavement, although he did encounter teenagers working for meager wages in difficult conditions. According to Chris Knight, it was to write a book, and that was certainly not being a hermit.

Her three small children Zachery, Sadie, and Madison, were four, three, and two respectively. If Longo could do this to his own wife and children, Penny reasoned, he could do it to anyone.

Now he was on the run and Penny wanted to know how she could protect her young family. But even though he was just a week-and-a-half away from being apprehended by police, the trauma for Penny's own family was just beginning.

Not only did she have to deal with the violent death of her sister and her sister's children, there was Longo's trial and death sentence and the media circus that inevitably enveloped her family.

A few years later there was the book, penned by a former New York Times journalist. For Penny there's no escape from Christian Longo. Frustrated with his life of domesticity, and battling serious financial woes, one night Longo strangled MaryJane in their bedroom, killed his youngest daughter Madison the same way, then stuffed their bodies into suitcases.

Almost a week would pass before the large green suitcases containing MaryJane and Madison were discovered in a marina not far from the flat the family rented in the town of Waldport.

In November, , a month before Longo murdered his family, Michael Finkel was working as a writer for the New York Times magazine and it had just published a story of his about the modern-day slave trade in Mali.

But around the same time Longo was on the run in Mexico, Finkel had been exposed for inventing the main protagonist in his story and was about to be fired from his post at the Times and publicly disgraced.

A newspaper reporter in Oregon called telling him about his tenuous connection to the state's most evil killer in a generation.

By now, Longo was in jail awaiting trial for murder. Later, after Longo admitted his guilt, Finkel said he wanted to understand how he could have killed his entire family.

Then he began work on the book he hoped would vindicate himself as a journalist. But Penny Baker-Dupuie says Finkel is simply profiting from the brutal murders of her sister, her nieces and nephew.

To Dupuie, Longo is a monster who has never repented for the most horrendous crimes and should never have been the subject of a book or film. When I speak to him by phone, Finkel tells me it was a story that chose him; one which he'd been dragged into.

Chris Longo may be a monster but I'd say if you turn away and ignore someone like Chris you might miss something.

If we look him in the eye we might learn something. He was inspired, he said, by the Will Smith film Seven Pounds, in which Smith kills seven people in a car crash and by way of reparation, pledges to donate his own organs, saving the lives of seven others, after committing suicide.

Longo told Finkel that lethal injection rendered organs inviable, but that a change in the execution procedure could change that, and he wanted to confront the ethical issues that still stood in the way of condemned men and women donating their organs after death.

If he was successful, Longo told Finkel, he would waive the rest of his legal appeals, speeding up his own journey to the death chamber.

The result was a feature story that goes into forensic detail about Longo's life on death row — his pornography collection, prison etiquette, even the snacks he eats.

Finkel writes that Longo's fabricated life extends behind the prison walls as well. Turns out, since the events depicted in True Story , Finkel started over thanks in large part to Longo's story.

At a time when Finkel was publically disgraced and his promising career in ruins, the story of the most notorious killer in the country at the time became entwined with his own thanks to Longo's insistence that he would only discuss his case with Finkel.

During an in-depth interview for CBS's 48 Hours , Finkel says at the beginning of his relationship with Longo, "He was the only friend or person in my life to whom I felt morally superior.

Finkel, a born storyteller, could not resist the draw of Longo's story, even as the grisly details would become increasingly hard for him to stomach.

Since Finkel chronicled the life and trial of Longo, he has tried to distance himself from the man he once reluctantly called "friend.

Finkel is now married with children of his own, and he finds it harder than ever to think about the brutal way Longo murdered his own wife and children.

Earlier this month , Finkel told Vulture:. He was very calm, and answered each one in a completely understandable way.

I tried my hardest to catch him in any sort of lie or misstatement, and there was absolutely nothing. His story, as hard as it is to get your head around, is absolutely true.

PRH: One of the reasons that people hated him was that he disturbed the sense of tranquility that they had in the woods.

In a couple of states, it is legal to shoot someone dead who comes into your home uninvited. PRH: One of the things that enabled you to build a rapport with Chris is that you had your own troubles in the past.

MF: Back in the year , I was fired when I was working for the New York Times magazine for combining a bunch of interviews into one and making a falsified character.

It was really humiliating, and I wondered if my writing career was over. I had no other skills except for waiting tables.

I think what something like that does is humble you. I know I am a flawed and completely human person. When I write or get in touch with other people, I tell them about getting fired and being humiliated.

I think most people see that as understandable, and really human. When you buy a book, we donate a book.

For Dupuie and the rest of MaryJane's family, Longo has always been a liar. And the latest in a long line of people he had duped, they believe, is Michael Finkel.

To some extent Finkel agrees. But I make my living as a writer, as a journalist, so Why do I do it? The story?

The greater good? My big fat ego? I ask how much of True Story is about the rehabilitation of Mike Finkel — the disgraced journalist.

The story is not an examination of a murderer. We know who did it. I chose a very unorthodox form of therapy, but there you have it.

But, Finkel wonders, perhaps there is a silver lining. But maybe a future MaryJane — someone else in the same situation — will say 'holy shit I'm married to a guy like Chris.

I need help, I need protection. So perhaps there is some good that could be done here. Over the years Penny has written to Longo in prison, but the letters tailed off a while ago.

When Longo was first in jail awaiting trial, Penny and her sister Sally tried to see him in person. He did say that [the day of the murders] Zach had woken up before he threw him off that bridge.

How does that not stop you? Penny says the only time she saw Longo cry during the trial was when he was sentenced. She says she received a letter from Longo before his trial asking her to tell prosecutors not to seek the death penalty.

He contacted her again after coming up with the idea of donating his organs and launching his charity. I told him he could have saved four lives and he chose not to.

I knew it was a con — that he was doing it for the publicity. Both in the film and in interviews, it has been widely reported Longo calls Finkel on the first Sunday of every month.

Despite his better judgement, Finkel almost always picks up the phone. So yes, I pick up the phone. Even as Finkel's life moves forward, a part of him will continue to look back as long as the murderer who assumed his identity and drew Finkel into his life still lives.

For Finkel, True Story is as much his story as it is Longo's. By Sabienna Bowman. Results for:. When I encounter Chris Knight, and I met with him many times in the jail, he had this daunting intelligence where I knew I was in the presence of someone smarter than me, which is really an odd feeling.

It shows that you can actually be too smart for the world. MF: He implied it. He found it crazy that if you spent eight hours a day locked into a little cubicle typing on a screen, then that was really acceptable, but if you spent that amount of time living in a tent thinking beautiful thoughts and living in nature, then that was crazy.

He was confused by that labeling, and I found myself nodding in agreement more often than I can even admit. PRH: I found it surprising that he considered Thoreau a dilettante.

Chris Knight had such a negative reaction to Thoreau that I almost thought that they were similar enough that he considers him a competitor.

Chris never hesitated to denigrate Henry David Thoreau. He thought that two years in a cabin made him a dilettante, and even more, what was the reason that Henry David Thoreau went to his cabin on Walden Pond?

According to Chris Knight, it was to write a book, and that was certainly not being a hermit. What does a book do? Look at me. He had no interest in advertising himself to the outside world.

In fact, he did everything in his power to avoid everyone else. It was a mega bestseller. That book touched a nerve.

Something like twenty percent of the population considers themselves, or could be labeled, introverted. They really prefer to be alone or in a quiet situation.

Modern society really drowns out these people. There have always been hermits: people who want to get away from other humans.

Literally, some of the first extant books and poems found in Mesopotamia and China mention people living alone in the woods.

The internet has been really good for hermits. I love it. I think that there are about a thousand hermits there, but you have to qualify to join.

You have to prove to the administrator that you are a hermit. MF: I spent most of my youth in Montana where there are long, cold winters, but Maine has the coldest winters you could imagine.

Not only are they long, not only does it snow, but it gets really damp. Now, imagine doing that for an entire winter times twenty-seven, and not lighting a fire.
