There have been so many different increments of weight loss throughout my life that I still don't feel entirely comfortable disclosing how much weight I lost and how long it took me.
But now, I am the opposite of embarrassed. I am really proud and honored to be in a position where I can advocate for women and empower people.
Sixty-six percent of women over the age of 20 in this country are dealing with being overweight or obese, and I think it's a serious discussion we need to have.
What exactly made you decide to lose weight in your thirties? Was there an aha moment? Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight knows it's such an emotional, complicated thing.
As an actor, there are certain roles that you really can't play or be cast in when you're overweight. But I don't want to sensationalize it; my weight loss was more of an internal thing, and it was about mentally and physically wanting to be in a place where I could feel really comfortable in my own skin.
When I turned 30, I had this image of myself and where I wanted to be in five, in 10 years — but the reality of my situation just didn't match up.
So it was as simple as that — and as complex as a thousand other things going into it. Had you always been critical of your body or of the way you looked on camera?
I always tried to love myself for who I was, and I encourage everybody to do the same. But there were moments where I wanted something different for myself.
If that is true for you, I say, "Rock on, dude! If you talk to your doctor and he's like, "Hey, you're totally healthy," and if you're comfortable, then great.
I say more power to you to love yourself. But, if there are health concerns, I think it is a good idea to talk to your doctor about making a change.
It doesn't mean trying to be super skinny or trying to fit into some sort of idealized image of what you should be. It just means it's important to be as healthy as you can possibly be.
Just pondering life with a spoon on my nose. What was the biggest change you made to succeed in your weight loss journey? I used to zone out without even realizing I was overeating.
Because I'd lose track of what I'd eaten, I'd feel like I hadn't had enough food. What really helped me was becoming a conscious eater.
I became someone who really paid attention to what I was putting in my mouth.
