The writing is fantastic as you see the war through Agu's eyes, and it's not pretty. This kind of situation is almost completely unfamiliar for most audiences, and Fukunaga manages to supplement fear for grace.
He never lets us forget the harsh realities of war, touching on familiar themes like family but going a step further by making it personal for Agu.
As the film is his story through and through, the adult details of war are kept to a minimum. The audience is just like Agu, unaware of exactly why there is fighting but rolling with it because it's his only choice.
There's no strategic battle scenes, no planning on a map or signing peace treaties, as we are thrust into moments just like Agu is.
When the violence does break out, it's brutal and harrowing. Young actor Attah is ferocious yet sympathetic, and he brings these battle sequences down to earth.
The creative risks that Fukunaga takes with these sequences might come across as pandering, yet they make sense cinematically and come across as action poetry.
There's a certain lyricism to the war torn villages and jungles of the continent, and it's beautiful and unforgettable. There isn't much dialogue in the film, but when there is it's brilliant.
The unnamed commandant's ideology becomes clearer as the film goes on, and it reaches a disturbing peak. Fukunaga contrasts him with the initially innocent Agu and the two are at odds yet retain respect for one another.
There are times when Agu could simply point a gun at the commandant and be done with it, but there's a humanity to the film that respects all lives.
War isn't pretty, and Beasts of No Nation knows that. Yet this risky piece of entertainment remembers to be a film first and everything else second.

Verified Purchase. I was blown away by this book. Flowing prose and beautiful language can be nice, but this is much more real, putting it much deeper in the perspective and psyche of one from Africa.
Iweala does an excellent job of preserving the language and writing style through the book, and I for one thought it was brilliantly done. The book also raises amazing questions about evil, struggle, and forgiveness, among many others.
I found myself dumbstruck at the end, constantly pondering the questions that were in my head and amazed at how beautifully Iweala conveyed the ideas.
This book was great on every level, and I tell everyone about when asked for recommendations. I had to read this for a class, "Comparative Globalisations," for what it's worth.
The book is told in a permanent present tense. I won't talk too much about the book, other than to say if you want a relatively provocative fable of child-soldiers, this book is pretty good.
Yes, Iweala was never a child soldier--his mother is Finance Minister of Nigeria, and was briefly considered to run the IMF a couple years back Ngozi Okonj- Iweala , and he wrote this for his Harvard thesis.
Be that as it may, the story is still incredibly powerful, and we can feel trapped along with the character Agu as he fights in a war he cannot control nor understand.
Some have said the ending is too abrupt or feels "tacked-on," which, honestly, is kinda true. But I choose to believe there is a reason for the abruptness of the last chapter.
What that is I will not venture to say in this short space. I should say that the copy I bought shipped with mold all over the outside of the pages and spreading through the back.

The main character in the story is Agu who is a young boy whose life has totally changed as he was forced to fight. He is skinny, precocious, and really wants to be anywhere else other than where he is.
He watches people being slaughtered, he has to eat dirt, he has to go to the bathroom wherever he can, and he has to watch brutality like he has never seen before.
Iweala writes in a stunningly descriptive and brutal way and your stomach will turn numerous times as you read through this brief novel. I do recommend it as a good reflection on the great tragedies that happen across so many different African countries.

Throughout this book we see the horrors of what it's like to be a child soldier through Agu's eyes. All he knows now is how to obey the Luftenant and the Commandant.
We witness his constant flashbacks of better times, his struggle with what he was taught about God from his parents and how it relates to the killing he is now forced to do, his discontentment with being sexually abused The style of language the author used was all the more captivating to me and really drew me into the story.

Then rendering it in a form of patois to be read by those from many miles away adds to the difficulty. This is a classic Hobbesian novel nasty, brutish and short Fortunately for us this is a shortened version of what many child soldiers suffered.
The reader, I suspect, not easily enduring the reality. It is a horrible story, well told. Yeah its good not alot to say avout it tbh i t went into depth sometimes i didnt get some off the stuff but still dont but the story was good.

The pain that the child describes bleeds off the page and stabs at the reader's heart. I haven't been this moved for a long time. A compelling read, distressing in a way that you can't look away.
Told through the eyes of a small boy forced into a very bad place, sad that to think the stories in the book are reality for some people and hope that one day any truth from these types of stories will be consigned to history.

Agu loses track of time, understanding only that he was a child before that war but has become a man in a seemingly never-ending trial by fire.
He wants to stop killing but fears that so doing will get him killed by the Commandant. During this time of war Agu and the army have very little to eat, so they eat what they can: rats, small game, goats, and sometimes other people.
The food is not cooked enough for fear that others will see the fire, and the water is known to contain human feces.
Agu and other children in the battalion are raped by the Commandant in return for small tokens. While Agu hates the rape, he does not resist as he fears he will be killed by the Commandant if he does so.
The Commandant eventually takes the battalion to the village of his birth where they visit a brothel. Commandant's second in command, Luftenant, is shot by a prostitute.
Out of jealousy, this hit was ordered by the Commandant because Luftenant was promoted to 'General' before him. Luftenant is then replaced by a soldier named Rambo, thus named because of his bloodthirst.
His wish to escape the army finally comes true when Rambo leads a successful revolt against the Commandant in a period of agonising lack of basic necessities.
Starved, exhausted and bereaved of his only friend, Strika, Agu joins the disbanded soldiers to try to make their way home. Agu ultimately leaves his fellow soldiers.
Agu gets new clothes and all the food and sleep he wants and regains his health and strength. However, after having lived through a bloody guerrilla war, the Bible no longer holds any meaning for him.
Amy invites him to share his thoughts and feelings, and Agu tells her he would like to be a doctor and save lives so as to redeem his sins.
