Never have I seen such plodding, mind-numbing boredom inducing film-making in my entire life, and I say this as someone who is a huge fan of films like Valhalla Rising where slow and weird is the currency.
Each scene is like watching mimes in slow motion, the sole purpose of each shot seeming to show how slow a human can move while doing nothing of import or interest.
That is, unless you count the main character looking down with her eyes wide open while the camera imprisons you there for 2 solid minutes, aggressively challenging you to find a reason as to why you're still watching.
And it won, I never did find out why I kept watching. You become so conditioned to boredom, that when something actually does happen, it's so over indulgent and self important that it is completely unaware that it just listlessly wafted its viewer from monotonous scenes of nothingness to monotonous scenes of something resembling story portrayed in the same dull, lifeless, oppressive inanity.
I usually give films with good cinematography at least a 2 or 3, because I believe you can tell an effective story with great and well-thought out visuals, but this film utterly fails even in that regard.
At best it's just sometimes pretty, but with absolutely no substance behind it whatsoever. This film is a ONE.
Not a three, not even a two, it is a one out of five. The cinematography actually hurts this film, in that it makes you believe you will get something out of it, and so like in an abusive relationship, after each violent waste of your time that comprises each scene, the visuals promise the next scene will be different, but it never is.
It was like watching bananas brown, but without the potential of bread pudding afterwards. Even something so horrific as that was rendered completely ineffective by the atrocious telling of this story, which at most should have comprised all of 14 minutes.
Somewhere around the last 20 minutes of the film I just couldn't take it any more and just skipped forward 10 seconds at a time until something happened.
That's a first for me, out of literally tens of thousands of films. Just go watch The Vvitch. There is no reason to ever watch this film, unless you're training to resist some kind of torture that involves inflicting lethal amounts of boredom.
The best looking 1 out of 5 I think I've ever wasted my time on. More arthouse than horror, more style than substance, and more gorgeous photography than dialogue.
The dark trees silhouetted in contrast to the barren snow are illustrative of hardship. But scenes of snow-covered cabins and sunset mountains maintain a soft beauty behind the powerfully fearful superstition of the locals in 15th century Europe.

The peasantry fancy her a witch, and she endures their enmity. Very much like The Witch , this film is heavily atmospheric and slow-paced.
There is nothing in the way of action, scares or special effects. But anyone seeking the next Deathgasm will be sorely disappointed.
Was her mother a witch, bewitched herself, or simply superstitious and increasingly delusional with plague? Adding to its mystery is the general paucity of dialogue.
Overall, I find great difficulty recommending this film. I think films students and aficionados will notice and appreciate much more in this than most viewers.
This is a good movie. If you enjoyed the witch or hereditary you will most likely enjoy this. This is a mood piece with no plot, progression, story, or supernatural horror elements of any kind.
The director has "boldly eschewed narrative" in favor of minutes of a person standing in the Austrian woods, looking about sadly.

This was a blind buy, for me - very happy i did, too! Superbly photographed, a dark and brooding visual feast, there is no real need for a plot or dialogue of which there is hardly any!
Oh yes, and the sound - from the moaning, bass heavy sound effects, to the crisp, nuanced sounds of foreboding woodland and the surrounding hills, the soundscape is suitably appropriate.
Be aware though, this is a German film with English subtitles. Arrow, continue to release, and introduce me to, these quality off-the-beaten-track horror films, and i will chuck my money your way Report abuse.
