We all know the DVD version for some reason cut out a bunch of sound effects for seemingly no reason. Even though my understanding the Deluxe Edition picture quality wise is pretty good it still didn't fix said audio problems so I had been holding off on buying it on dvd despite it being one of my favorite films since childhood.
Anyway so i was thinking since the edition was old and from a no name distributor that maybe they did like many other old cheap dvd's and just upload VHS copy onto the DVD.
This is no the case as I said the sound effects are missing even on here. Although maybe it's a key to the mystery, maybe it's Peter Pan Industries to blame.
Maybe they took out the sound effects and got rid of the original tracks so an actual restoration isn't impossible for when Warner Bros or whoever owns the dvd rights now.
And on top of all of that the beginning of the film is altered with a few shots taken out and one image spins around while another does that digital page turn transition.
I'm not sure but the title font looks to have been added as it looks just a little bit pixely and brighter and clearer than the rest of the image however it is the same font so I can't complain too much.
I am scratching my head in confusion about this release. It is the same exact quality and sound as the older DVD release of it, plus it still doesn't have the missing segments that others have discussed.
What is so "Remastered and Deluxe Edition" about it? The extras make no sense either. There is the usual "facts and bio" nonsense and then for some reason there are three Bugs Bunny cartoons as extras that also aren't remastered and there is a loud hissing sound in the audio when they play.
When I first heard about this rerelease I was so excited thinking that the animated version would finally get the royal treatment, but no. I am going to return it to Amazon and get my money back.
As any enthusiast of this movie probably knows, when the movie was originally converted to DVD there were numerous defects in the sound, and a few edits that disrupted the original narrative flow I imagine I'm not the only person who can quote this movie verbatim.
In particular, in the scene where Smaug is flying over Laketown, the guards fire a barrage of arrows at him. In the original, there was a distinctive staccato ringing sound as of many arrows striking a hard surface, but in the previous defective DVD release, this sound effect is absent.
I thought that in the "new release", this issue and the numerous other defects would be corrected, but all Warner Bros. I'm trying not to take this personally, but this under-handed maneuver really does seem like an insult both to their customers and to the legacy of JRR Tolkien.
Stick with your VHS copy, because that's gonna have to last probably forever, or at least until someone who has some modicum of integrity decides to remaster it correctly and re-release it.
This review is about the digital amazon movie: Still good, but they have sped-up scenes where voice-over happens making it faster than usual when characters are about to appear on screen.
I watched the VHS as a child and it was one of my favorite movies. If you want the DVD or digital copy it is not a complete loss and if you have never seen it it is better to see it without the full sound effects than to not see it at all.

Nie ins deutsche synchronisiert, bietet diese DVD von El Hobbit aber auch den original englischen Ton und eben in Spanisch - allerdings sabbeln die dort so schnell, habe nur Tapas, Ibiza und Barcelona verstanden; kann ich aber auch nur einfach falsch verstanden haben?!
Die englische Original-Synchro ist episch und die dortig gesungenen Songs von Fein bis Kindisch orientiert. Aber, wie schauen denn hier bloss die Charaktere aus?
Der Film ist sooo schlecht, dass ich ihn widerum toll finde! Hat aber auch so seine tollen Momente. Translate review to English.
