The story follows an elite unit of the LA sheriff's department that investigates a crew that's planning on robbing the Los Angeles Federal Reserve Bank.
Also, the film goes out of its way to blur the line between good guys and bad guys; which makes it hard to root for anyone. Still, the action scenes are intense and exciting particularly the final shootout.
And a couple of the plot-twists are kind of clever. Den of Thieves is entertaining, but without with a compelling story or characters it ends up being a second rate heist film.

Both a crime drama and heist film, Den of Thieves does what it sets out to do well even if Gerard Butler looks like he's about to have a heart attack at any given moment and poses no real threat to Pablo Schreiber's more imposing and charismatic Merrimen who leads the titular thieves in what is a more labored and methodical plot than one might initially give such a movie as Den of Thieves credit for.

It's not like I'm seeking out every Gerard Butler movie out there anyway. However, Den of Thieves proved to be a film that will take more than a day or two to forget.
And for a January release, I'd say that's an accomplishment. This is far from an A-movie action film. It doesn't have a ton of levels of direction, acting, or writing.
But sometimes all I want is to enjoy some well-shot and heart pumping action sequences with some inconsequential thrills along the way.
Den of Thieves give me just that, and surprisingly a couple chuckles as well whether they were intentional or not.
I honestly don't remember and I've seen conflicting answers online and his back and forth with Pablo Schreiber.
The latter is quietly building himself a solid career with this, American Gods, and his upcoming film with Damien Chazelle.
Watch out for this guy. But he's very entertaining, as is Butler, flexing their muscles and manhood all the way through this Heat rip-off heist thriller.
Seriously though, this movie is literally Heat. However, it's worth noting that just because this film lacks originality, doesn't mean it lacks in quality.
Albeit definitely 20 minutes too long, it's hard to think of a better action film from January that I can remember. This is most certainly a 5.

The movie is a little more fun than it has any right to be, thanks to its super-serious cast including Tommy Lee Jones, Ryan Reynolds, Gary Oldman, and Gal Gadot and the straight-faced approach to its ridiculous shenanigans.
Bruce Diones. All the ingredients are there for a pleasant pander to grumpy old white men: the craggy actors, the foreign bad guys wielding confusing technology, the kindness of beautiful young women, and the nobility of sacrifice.
Matthew Lickona. Criminal is an action-thriller with a science fiction twist. To the extent that its purpose is to energize and involve an audience, it succeeds.
James Berardinelli. It's wanton, low-down entertainment without the flair to pull this stuff off, or the neural stem cells to make wit or logic much of a priority.
Tim Robey. Not a travesty, there isn't much to recommend "Criminal" to anyone outside of Kevin Costner completists. Brent McKnight. A unique take on a CIA spy thriller with a Frankenstonian spin, Criminal is a hard-hitting, tech-savvy, high octane adrenaline rush with underlying social and moral implications ripe for discussion.
Debbie Lynn Elias. Criminal wants to give the impression of being a more thoughtful film than it actually is. Allen Adams. For the most part it's a pretty by the number thriller, riddled with cliches, that slightly sets itself apart because of its sheer insanity.
Micheal Compton. Kevin Costner is an engaging and complex character that shows different depths throughout the film.
Sharronda Williams. Criminal is a harmless, if disposable piece of pre-summer entertainment, and as is so often the case, even when the material doesn't measure up, Kevin Costner is just eminently watchable.
